Is divorce mediation really less expensive?

On Behalf of | Mar 15, 2017 | Divorce Mediation

For many couples, the threat of financial strain or ruin can keep them from seeking out a divorce that they dearly need. In a traditionally litigated divorce, sparring attorneys often lead couples to fight over every asset, draining those assets in the process.

Even for couples who have some assets, the fear of losing everything they worked to build together may keep them in a broken relationship that is hurting everyone involved.

You may have heard that divorce mediation can solve your worries over the cost of a divorce – but maybe you worry that it sounds too good to be true.

The truth is that divorce mediation can be less expensive than traditional divorce, but only if you’re willing to work together with your spouse toward a fair compromise.

Each divorce is different and requires individual attention

No two divorces are exactly the same, so there is probably no way to know how your divorce may play out before you consult with an attorney.

An experienced attorney can help you and your spouse understand all of the aspects of your situation, ensuring that there are no surprises when it comes time for a judge to approve or deny your settlement.

In an effort to save money, some couples choose to use standard forms they found online. While these may suffice in some circumstances, many couples’ assets and needs are too complex to fully address without proper legal counsel.

The safest approach is to meet with a qualified attorney and work together to find a settlement that addresses every issue and leaves each party with a fair outcome.

This is not always easy, but if you are willing to trust your mediator and understand that all divorces are costly in some way or another, you can reach a fair settlement that will cost you much less than a traditional divorce.

It may take several mediation sessions to reach a complete agreement, but this is usually much quicker and less costly than both parties hiring separate lawyers and waging a very personal war.

Don’t approach divorce alone

Regardless of who you are or what your marital assets may be, mediation is a possibility if you are willing to work for a resolution. An experienced mediator can help you evaluate even the most complex assets or liabilities, as well as child custody and parenting plans. With proper legal guidance, your divorce can be civil and effective, protecting each party’s rights throughout the process.
