How seniors can have a fulfilling life after divorce

As you get older, your perspective and goals may change, such as regarding marriage and divorce. Perhaps you stuck through an unhealthy, unhappy marriage due to social expectations or children. Now that divorce holds less social shame and the children are grown and gone, you may be considering finally ending the relationship.

You are not alone. Gray divorce, or marital splits for those over 50, is on the rise for many reasons. Maybe you are hesitant to follow suit due to fears of life after divorce. While divorce is always stressful and emotional, life afterward can be full of hope if you make the right choices.

Stay connected

One of the biggest changes seniors face after splitting is loneliness, especially those in advanced years. It can be easy to fall into isolation, but that will not be good for your physical or emotional health. Stay connected through the following ways:

  • Visit friends and family if possible
  • Video chat regularly with loved ones who are far away
  • Make new friends by taking a class or joining an organization
  • Volunteer in your community
  • Adopt a pet

Having a support system is vital for anyone who has gone through a divorce regardless of age.

Have a life plan

Now that you are single again, what do you want to do with your life? Do you still have hopes of a satisfying relationship? Between in-person social events and online communities, it is easier to find other older single adults looking for a second chance at romantic fulfillment.

Perhaps you want to focus on personal development instead. You can get a job or switch careers, try a new hobby or travel.

Take care of yourself

Research shows that men who are married tend to have better health than bachelors, especially among older males in happy relationships, for a variety of reasons. No matter your gender, take charge of your health. Cook healthy meals and exercise daily, even if it just taking a walk. Visit your doctor regularly and set up a support team in the event of an emergency. The transition to singlehood may be challenging, but with some effort, it can be enjoyable.
