3 things you can look forward to after divorce

If you pay attention to American cinema, finding the perfect person, falling in love and getting married is the key to happiness for everybody — but that’s not exactly how it works in real life. Sometimes that “perfect person” turns out not to be so perfect after all — and your marriage becomes a burden on your psyche.

Frankly, there are times where divorced life is far from the lonely, isolated existence you might think it is. In fact, there are plenty of reasons to look forward to divorce when your marriage is unhappy, including:

1. You don’t have to compromise all the time

Living with someone else means compromising about a lot of different things — everything from what you have for dinner to the decor on the walls. Once you’re divorced, you can rewrite the rules for how you live your life — and probably should. It may be time to reinvent yourself, change your surroundings, upgrade your career, get a new wardrobe or pick up a new hobby. The best part? You don’t have to get anybody else’s consent before you make the changes.

2. You have full control of your finances again

Maybe you let your spouse manage the household finances — or maybe you shared the task. Either way, you probably haven’t been fully in control of your own money since you got married. Now, you get to make all the decisions. If you want to save for a rainy day, there won’t be anybody chipping away unnecessarily at your nest egg. If you want to put your money into travel, nobody will be there insisting you can’t afford it.

3. You have the opportunity for a much better relationship

As long as your unhappily married, you don’t have the freedom to seek a better match. Since you’ve already experienced what you don’t want in a relationship, you’re in a better position to find someone with the qualities you expect in a mate.

Marriage should never be an “unhappily ever after” story. If you’re unhappy in your relationship, it’s time to think about divorce and find out more about your options.
