Thinking of divorce? What should you do first?

Nobody enjoys the prospect of a divorce. Whether you expect the process to be clean or messy, the painful reality is that a “good” divorce is one that has been carefully planned.

Want to know what divorce lawyers wish all their clients knew before they tell their spouse they want a divorce? Here are the tips they offer:

1. Get some legal advice

Most divorce attorneys offer free consultations. That’s the best way to get familiar with an attorney and decide if you have the right chemistry to make a good team. It’s also an excellent way to get a good feel for your situation and an understanding of what might happen next.

If you see several attorneys, pay attention to the broad messages you get. The attorney who says what you want to hear may not be the right attorney to hire if every other attorney is saying something different.

2. Prepare for your future

Has it been a while since you’ve held a job outside the home? Are you financially dependent on your spouse? That degree you earned 25 years ago probably won’t help you in the job market today. Take some classes, update your certificates or go for a new degree while you’re still working out your plan for divorce.

If possible, find a new job before you start talking to your spouse about divorce.

3. Get any big purchases out of the way

If you’re going to need a new car once you get a divorce or some new furniture, purchase it before you start talking divorce. Most of the time, a financial freeze is imposed on the family finances once the actual divorce process starts — which can leave you in a bind.

Don’t forget to tuck a little cash away for necessary expenses while the freeze is in effect. That “rainy day” fund is important.

While no one is going to tell you that divorce is a cakewalk, you can make the process easier on yourself by doing pre-divorce planning. Find out more about your legal options today.
