Do Sensationalized Wedding Dates Cause Higher Divorce Rates?

Of all the potential factors that could lead to a divorce, one that is rarely considered is the date of the wedding. However, a new report reveals that getting married on Valentine's Day or on unique dates such as 9/9/99 could come with an increased risk of the marriage ending in divorce.

Does The Wedding Date Really Cause The Divorce?

According to an article from Phys.org, the Melbourne Institute released a report that showed that wedding date may predict the durability of a marriage. The report is based on divorce registries of Dutch marriages between 1999 and 2013. It compares divorce rates of people with standard wedding dates to divorce rates of people married on Valentine's Day or on a date with unusual numerical significance.

The findings of the report showed that divorce rates were 18-36% higher for couples who chose gimmicky wedding dates, for lack of a better term. By the fifth anniversary, 11% of spouses who married on Valentine's Day, 10% who married on the same number date and 8% who married on ordinary dates had divorced.

Of course, the date of the wedding itself does not cause the divorce. However, couples who chose special dates tended to display other characteristics that may have led to the divorce. For example, people who chose unique date weddings were more likely to be marrying the second time and wanted this one to be special.

In addition, the report also showed that those who chose unique dates for the wedding were more likely to be different in education level as well as age. Couples who chose Valentine's Day as their special day were more likely to be expecting a child, according to the study.
