On Behalf of | Jan 18, 2018 | Property Division |

Child support payments are awarded in many divorces, and the specifics about how much the support payments will be for and for how long they will last varies wildly from case to case. There are many factors that go into determining how much child support should be awarded, including the age of the child, the educational and medical needs of the child, and the financial situations and obligations of the spouses involved.

Once it is determined though and child support payments begin, the receiving spouse may have questions or concerns regarding how they can spend their payments. So let’s talk about it. What can you spend your child support payments on? Consider the following:

  • Educational costs are covered by child support payments. This means that tuition, school fees, costs related to schooling (such as supplies, backpacks, and other costs) are all covered by child support.
  • Basic life costs are also covered by child support. Rent, clothing, food, utilities and bills, and numerous other necessities for life can be paid for with your child support.
  • Medical care and child care can be covered by child support too. This includes uninsured medical costs, as well as nannies, babysitters, and other child care facilities.
  • “Fun” activities and extracurricular activities can also be covered by child support payments. Does your son want a video game system? Does your daughter want to be in a basketball camp? Child support can help in these regards.
